Unsafe Levels of Toxic Chemicals Found in Drinking Water of 33 States

In today’s article I am focusing on a Harvard University study of toxic chemicals.

Chemicals are just one category of contaminants sometimes found in drinking water.  Other categories are:

PHYSICAL – such as sediments or organic material suspended in the water of lakes, rivers and streams from soil erosion.

BIOLOGICAL – are organisms in water.  They are also refered to as microbes or microbiological contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, protozoan, and parasites.

RADIOLOGICAL – are chemical elements with an unbalanced number of protons and neutrons resulting in unstable atoms that can emit ionizing radiation, such as cesium, plutonium and uranium.

CHEMICALS  –  Chemical contaminants are elements or compounds.  They may be naturally occurring or man-made.  Examples include nitrogen, bleach, salts, pesticides, metals, toxins produced by bacteria, and human or animal drugs.

Today we will focus on the Harvard study of chemical contaminants.

The Harvard study has found that “the drinking water of millions of Americans contains PFASs, industrial chemicals known to cause cancer and immunodeficiency.”

The article was authored by Karen Feldscher, Harvard Chain School Communications.

PFASs are polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances

“For many years, chemicals with known and unknown toxicities, such as PFASs, were allowed to be used and released to the environment, and we now have  to face the severe consequences,” according to lead author Xindi Hu, a doctoral student in the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard Chan School of Arts and Sciences.”

She said:  “The actual number of people exposed may be even higher than our study fund, because government data for  levels of these compounds in drinking water is lacking for almost a third of the U.S. population – about 100 million people.”

PFASs have been used over the past 60 years in FASs, the chemicals continue to persist in people and wildlife.

Conclusion

I won’t continue with more of the article, except to say that this is just one more study that has resulted in evidence that our drinking water has been assaulted and we are, or may be casualties.

One of the purposes for which I write this blog is to put the information in front of you, not to scare, but inform.

There have been many studies of drinking water contamination.  Many studies by universities, many by environmental watchdog organizations, many by the scientific community and many by the U.S. Government.  I study and report on these studies as I find them.

Thanks again for reading
